15 October 2007 : ARBOR DAY ART COMPETITION 2007
INSPIRATION FROM OUR FORESTS
Hundreds of learners from schools in Cape Town, the Boland, Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma regions have had the chance to experience the majesty and inspiration of our forests. The MTO Forestry Arbor Day Art Competition encouraged 640 scholars, from primary and secondary schools, to produce a rich harvest of art. This year’s competition reaped nearly five times as many entries than were submitted in 2006 and were of a higher standard. Teachers were encouraged to take scholars on trips to local forests or bring elements of the forest, such as leaves, branches or seed pods, into the classroom.

The competition was organised by MTO Forestry, one of the largest forestry management organisations in the country, in conjunction with The Fairest Cape Association (FCA). Over 56 schools entered the competition, which encouraged learners to creatively explore the wonder and diversity of indigenous forestsand the vital role plantation forests play in our economy.

The competition was split into two categories, primary and secondary/art schools, and learners between the ages of 6 to 18 were invited to participate. However, in line with the trend set by last year’s competition, nearly 80% of entries were from primary schools. A R35 500 prize package is being awarded to the top creative minds and hands in each region. Schools received 60% and the artist 40% of the prize value in the form of vouchers for art supplies and tuition.

9 September 2007 : CLEAN UP BEGINS
10 September is the start of the annual National Clean Up campaign. Cape Town has traditionally used the last two weeks of spring month to really clean up, and this year is no exception.

The Fairest Cape Association are members of Clean Up The World and will be celebrating this clean up period with school cleanups before and during the school holidays. In addition to many community groups, primary schools including EC (Grassy Park), Injongo (Khayelitsha), St Agnes’ (Woodstock), Cypress and Sunnyside (Athlone), Siyabulela (Langa) and Muhammadeyah (Wynberg) will be taking to neighbourhoods in Cape Town to highlight the problem of litter and dumping.

On Heritage Day at the start of the school holidays the Rondevlei community in Seawinds will be having a clean up in conjunction with Environmental Health and the Fairest Cape Association. Another highlight in September is International Coastal Clean Up Day on Saturday 15 where groups of volunteers worldwide clean up the oceans shoreline.

Plastic clean up bags supplied by the Plastics Federation are available at the Fairest Cape Association offices for any community grow up or school that wish to have a clean up between 10th and 30th September. Call Ernest 021 462 2040 to arrange collection.
