Keep the Cape in shape
Keep the Cape in Shape is a well-known initiative of The Fairest Cape Association, a non-governmental organisation 002-892 NPO, which gets clean-ups going and educates various communities and organisations in the proper treatment of solid waste, including litter.

Your support is needed to help address the unacceptable litter and dumping and poor waste management practices that spoil the natural beauty of our Mother City and the Western Cape. Litter is the most visible sign of pollution that aesthetically degrades our landscape. It can cause injury to people and wildlife. It encourages pests such as rodents and scavaging animals such as dogs, jackals and seagals leading to the spread of disease.

It is estimated that over 3 million items are littered daily in the City of Cape Town. Dumping is intentional illegal disposal of waste having the same effect as litter. There are thousands of illegal dumpsites.

Litter and illegal dumping of waste does find its way into storm water drains, canals and rivers and does pollute the sea and harms marine life. Dumped waste is often burned causing harmful air pollution. It costs millions of rand to collect, transport and dispose of litter and dumping in landfill space that is at a premium. Once designated landfills are closed waste will be transported well beyond city limits, costing even more to rate-payers.

CAN YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY BECOMING A MEMBER OF KEEP THE CAPE IN SHAPE?

KEEP the CAPE in SHAPE is offering you an opportunity to make a difference by subscribing to a membership that is promoting a cleaner, healthier and safer environment for all. The Fairest Cape Association is involved in programmes and projects to reduce the amount of visible waste and to minimise waste at source.

By becoming a member Keep the Cape in Shape your contributions will be used to support the following programmes:

Clean Community
Waste management education through workshops and door-to-door training and skills training to implement recycling or greening and gardening projects.
Schools' Teacher Training
Educators are encouraged to incorporate waste management into the school curriculum. From the conclusion of the training schools are expected to take on an environmental project for the benefit of the local community.
Adopt-a-Spots and clean ups
Unkempt or underutilised areas are revitalised by schools and communities. Regular clean ups are held to complement city services and raise awareness of litter.
Recycling assistance and resources
We maintain a directory of drop-off points for materials and have a resource centre open to the public catering for the broader environmental issues.
