Keep the Cape in Shape is a well-known initiative of The Fairest Cape Association, a non-governmental organisation 002-892 NPO, which gets clean-ups going and educates various communities and organisations in the proper treatment of solid waste, including litter.

Your support is needed to help address the unacceptable litter and dumping and poor waste management practices that spoil the natural beauty of our Mother City and the Western Cape. Litter is the most visible sign of pollution that aesthetically degrades our landscape. It can cause injury to people and wildlife. It encourages pests such as rodents and scavaging animals such as dogs, jackals and seagulls leading to the spread of disease.

It is estimated that over 3 million items are littered daily in the City of Cape Town. Dumping is intentional illegal disposal of waste having the same effect as litter. There are thousands of illegal dumpsites.

Litter and illegal dumping of waste does find its way into storm water drains, canals and rivers and does pollute the sea and harms marine life. Dumped waste is often burned causing harmful air pollution. It costs millions of rand to collect, transport and dispose of litter and dumping in landfill space that is at a premium. Once designated landfills are closed waste will be transported well beyond city limits, costing even more to rate-payers.
